First Grade Curriculum

First Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Develop Independent Reading and Writing Skills

First Grade Home School Curriculum

The joy of our First Grade Homeschool Curriculum is watching your child develop into an independent reader and writer. Through activities that develop a full range of phonemic awareness, phonics, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency skills, you will help your child build on the printing skills learned in Kindergarten and begin to use our distinctive Calvert script, preparing him or her to express ideas in his or her own words.

Our formal spelling program overlaps with the phonics instruction in the reading course.

Math and Technology

Calvert is excited to offer a new math course using the world-renowned Singapore method. The Math manual is based on Houghton Mifflin Harcourt's Math in Focus: Singapore Math textbook. The course emphasizes conceptual understanding, critical thinking, problem solving, and skills fluency. Your child will focus on fewer concepts that are taught to mastery, thereby eliminating the need to reteach concepts year after year.

In the technology courses, your child will learn word processing, computer navigation, graphics skills, and visual mapping basics.

The science program includes the study of living things, our earth, weather, matter, motion, and energy.

Introduction to Social Studies

Your child’s first social studies classes explore original read-aloud narratives that include biographies of well-known explorers, political figures, inventors, and leaders in American life.

We are thoroughly enjoying the First Grade Curriculum. My daughter loves her math, Calvert Script, and spelling. The texts and teacher's manuals are excellent and so helpful.

I have a few regrets with the course. One is the social studies aspect is too wordy and my daughter loses interest very quickly. To me the information seems like it would apply to the third grade level. I'd love to see this redesigned with more basic readers and coloring pages (something like the Phonics books). The craft projects are fun, though.

Also, I really feel some type of fun math games (flashcards, oral games, etc) should be incorporated into the math lessons. After half a year of school, my daughter is still struggling to add two numbers without using her number line, and now we're already moving on to adding three digit numbers. Fun, daily math games would be really beneficial.

Overall, this course is exceptional and I highly recommend it to anyone who is considering using Calvert. The education my children are receiving is superb.

We love the first grade program through Calvert. I find it very easy to use and think that each subject compliments what else you have learned that day. I think there is a lot of diversity in what the child uses (workbooks, text books, computer, etc) yet it all flows very easily for the teacher. They offer several ways to learn one thing and then even more ways if your child needs extra help in that area. Love, love, love the first grade program!
