Fifth Grade Curriculum

Fifth Grade Homeschool Curriculum

Establishing Connections Between Subject Matter

Fifth Grade Home School CurriculumIn Calvert School's Fifth Grade Homeschool Curriculum, students learn the connections between American history, literature, and geography by reading classic historical novels such as Sing Down the Moon and The Sign of the Beaver.

Essential writing skills continue to be developed, including paragraphing, outlining, and summarizing. Your child will write original reports, stories, and essays using the lessons about sentence types in our grammar unit. Fifth Grade Calvert Math emphasizes problem-solving steps. Math covers multiplication up to three digits, geometry, multiplying and dividing fractions, and introduces integers.

Advances in Technology, Geography, and Art

Technology instruction includes research skills and basic HTML. In science your child will study plants, weather, climates, and ecosystems. The geography unit focuses on regions of the United States.

Most exciting and unique to Calvert is our inclusion of art history in the Fifth Grade homeschool curriculum. Your child’s classical education will include picture study and A Child’s History of Art: Painting, another text written by Virgil Hillyer.

I really wish for Math there was something like nutshell math that I know my nephew gets from the public schools that you can go to if you are having a problem with something, they explain how to do it. They show you exmaples where I think some kids need that type of interaction to make sense of somethings. Sometimes, I cannot explain or show how to do things and I know we have the support but some kids just need to see it be explained and shown examples on how it is done. It makes it more clear to them.
So, I would love something like that especially for Math where each year it gets harder to explain....

Otherwise, I love everything else.

Calvert Math for 5th grade was a great resource and prepared my children for pre-Algebra this year. Science and History are based on typical public school texts and I found it necessary to suplement their materials from other sources. The Reading program seemed pretty simple for fifth graders, but my children are avid readers so maybe my expectations don't fit the norm. Again we supplemented materials. The grammar lessons were goo, old-fashioned and complete. A true joy to use. The computer-based interactive materials were pretty childish and we glossed over them completely. Again, my children are very computer literate and internet savvy - so maybe I expected too much from the course. Grading was fair and comments were complete and very encouraging. We loved the feed back and the knowledge that our grades would be accepted by our oversight teacher.

Calvert's Fifth Grade course was easy to follow and enjoyable. My only area of concern was that the science labs were a bit redundant as the student already knew the outcome before attempting the lab in many cases. Other than that, we loved our Fifth Grade experience with Calvert.

Fifth grade is a stimulating course for students and home teachers. The reading selections are generally excellent. Math is a well-designed course, and history is pretty good, too. The science, when I taught it, had many things that seemed to me were only included because they were in the book - such as the weather-station model. However, there may be new science books by now. When teaching this course, make sure to be very hands-on in science and all will go well.
