The new school year is right around the corner and Calvert School is happy to announce the exciting, innovative offerings and learning opportunities included in our courses for the 2011/2012 school year. New online resources will allow your student to make connections between lessons taught and the world around him, for a true “Aha” moment. Discovery Education STREAMING Videos
        
Calvert is pleased to present a new set of concept-specific videos from Discovery Education STREAMING. The videos will engage your Kindergarten through Eighth Grade student and help bring lessons alive. Parents will enjoy watching as their student makes the connection between the lesson taught and the world around him. Discovery Education STREAMING provides students with an extensive library of videos featuring exclusive titles from the Discovery Channel. A leader in digital video-based learning, Discovery Education produces high-quality digital resources that are scientifically proven and standards-based. An extensive streaming video library offers incredible resources in all major core subject areas, such as history that includes live re-enactments. Calvert Virtual Academy
Calvert School is pleased to present Calvert Virtual Academy, a dynamic program for Sixth through Eighth Grades that takes advantage of the latest instructional tools to provide an online environment that prepares students for high school. This new program offers flexibility and many tiers of instructional support. Your child can work at his or her own pace accommodating both your family’s schedule and your child’s learning style.

Student ID Cards Online
New this year, student ID cards are now available online through parent Learning Guide portals. Parents can now download and print Student ID Cards immediately after enrollment. Calvert’s Student ID Card program is designed to give you and your child several important benefits. To begin with, the Student ID Card not only recognizes that your child is enrolled in an accredited homeschooling program, but more importantly fosters your child’s connection to their school and fellow students. Fourth Grade Updates
In true Calvert style, Calvert’s curriculum and development team work conscientiously to provide academics that challenge and inspire. Through meticulous review and thorough result based research, our team has developed a curriculum that is even better than before. To that end, we combined the best of our Fourth Grade Academic and Scholastic programs, resulting in the best instructional experience possible.
In addition, new science lessons that are supported by a new textbook, McGraw Hill Science: A Closer Look, will engage your Fourth Grade student. Your student will enjoy exploring and learning about classification of plants and animals, weathering, Earth’s resources, electricity, and magnetism.
All of this and the option to select your student’s History/Social Studies content. Choose Hillyer’s well-loved classic A Child’s History of the World, one of the finest history books for children, to engage your student with stories of world history from prehistoric times through the twentieth century. For students who want to learn more about the U.S., select the Social Studies textbook Regions, providing lessons that explore the history, geography and resources of the United States.

 Online Math Textbook
Last year, Grades One and Two enjoyed our math textbook online with the use of TextHelp. This year we extended this online resource to include Grades Three through Six. More than just an electronic textbook, this presentation engages students with audio feedback and dual color text highlighting. Reading controls foster independent learning while zoom and pan controls provide support for the visually impaired. Features include an interactive Table of Contents, a dictionary, and a basic calculator. Students can insert color annotations, add sticky notes, and digitally construct individual study guides! There is even a word translator, for one-click translation of English words into Spanish.

Science Kits Added to Courses
Calvert School is happy to provide Science Kits, included in First through Eighth Grades. Science matters; it is no longer just a fun subject, but critical in today’s world. Research demonstrates that when students learn using hands-on science they truly learn science. Further, the benefits of hands-on science projects extend to other subjects such as reading, writing, language development and math.
Greater Course Flexibility
The Calvert experience begins with a placement process that helps determine the best course of study for your child. Designed to provide greater proficiency and flexibility, our three-part placement process addresses each student’s unique instructional needs. The three-part placement process will help place students at the appropriate instructional level for Grammar/Composition/Spelling and Math while allowing them to access their grade level content in Literature, Science and Social Studies.
Handy Back to School Checklist
Getting ready for school begins with gathering school supplies. While Calvert includes a number of required supplies in your course box, we realized that many supplies are now commonly available or already in your home. With this in mind, we removed readily available supplies from your course box in order to keep the course cost down; however, for those families who enjoy the back to school excitement of fresh supplies we have an optional supply kit available for purchase. For those families who prefer to re-use materials they already own, we have added a convenient “Back-to-School” checklist. This list, of readily available items, will make getting ready for school easier than ever. Some additional items, such as pictures from magazines, empty cans, string or oranges will need to be gathered and are listed in your printed and online Lesson Manuals at the beginning of each lesson.
Online Answer Keys
Calvert’s commitment to provide you with essentials for your home school year includes online answer keys. The delivery of the Answer Keys is online through your password protected Parent Learning Guide Portal. We believe this to be the best option to enable us to provide you with the most up-to-date and accurate answer keys possible. Changes can be made quickly and most likely before you are even ready for that set of answers. We recommend that families download Answer Keys and print them in 20 lesson sets so that you are working with the latest edition possible. While the online delivery is the best option, some families would prefer purchasing a printed set. With this in mind, Calvert is pleased to offer printed versions of Complete Course Answer Keys for a modest fee.
